Don't Ask, Don't Tell

That's the U.S. military's policy towards gay people. They don't ask about sexual orientation, and the soldiers aren't supposed to tell. Lt. Dan Choi did just that and he was kicked out of the army. Angry Asian Man (a blog) had a post about it, and while it didn't really take a stance on the issue, it got me to think about the whole thing more.

Now, I'm not against gay people at all. Far from that. I think the world is a bit retarded if it can't stand the thought of lovers just getting together. But maybe the military has a point in expelling soldiers that openly come out.

The military is composed mostly of men. Meaning that men probably sleep and change in the same room together. There's nothing weird about that, because no one gives a second thought about it. Unless they were gay. What if you had to change in front of someone you knew was gay? Wouldn't it bother you to know that they could be checking you out while you were naked?

I know that discrimination based on orientation is not the right answer, but something has to be done about it. There is a problem, and instead of kicking people out of the army, maybe we should be thinking about how to solve it.
